< University Neighborhood Housing Program

On Wednesday, June 11th, UNHP held a free Neighborhood Credit Resource Fair at Refuge House. This Credit Extravaganza was well attended by residents and organizations, such as our Northwest Bronx Resource Center partners Parodneck and The Financial Clinic, and SeedCoLIFTBronx Legal Services, Apple Bank, Citibank, FBCS and FBHC.

Participants received copies of their credit report, information on improving credit, and how credit affects housing, loans (home and auto), credit cards, employment, and car insurance. For many attendees, this was the first time seeing their credit report. “This was an insightful and learning experience for me. I never attempted to check my credit score. It was a wonderful 1st time experience,” shared a workshop participant at the event. Residents received on the spot help, scheduled follow-up appointments and enjoyed raffles and giveaways.

The extravaganza is over, but the doors to our Resource Center remain open! For continued support and our other services, feel free to contact us at 718-933-2539 or visit www.unhp.org

UNHP TAX DAY AT SERVIAM GARDENS SENIOR HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

In addition to our tax days held at the Northwest Bronx Resource Center at Refuge House, UNHP takes our free tax prep program on the road to accommodate Bronx seniors living in local partner senior housing developments.  The senior or HUD 202 Housing offers affordable, independent-living rental units for low income senior citizens. UNHP partners with Rose Hill ApartmentsServiam Gardens, Edison Arms and Msgr. Fiorentino Apartments.

Our first senior mobile day was held at Serviam Gardens, developed byFordham Bedford Housing Corporation (FBHC) on the sprawling and lush grounds of the Mt. St. Ursula Campus, a convent and Catholic girl’s high school. FBHC, the largest community sponsored housing corporation in New York City, manages Serviam Gardens and provides homes and social services to 286 low-income seniors.  In addition to using state of the art green technology and energy conservation measures in the construction and ongoing maintenance, Serviam Gardens also offers a movie theater, computer lab, exercise room, community spaces, a rooftop garden, and a wellness center. UNHP was able to assist 50 seniors in filing their taxes at Serviam on February 12, 2014.  Below are some of the great people we met:

UNHP 2014 Tax Preparation

(UNHP Tax Staff)

And we are off!  UNHP’s Northwest Bronx Resource Center began providing free tax preparation on January 29th, 2014 at Refuge House. As of 2/11/14, we have provided free tax preparation to 227 low and moderate income Bronx residents and a range of financial services.

During our 14 tax days we are able to open bank accounts, run credit reports, offer a brief financial coaching session, screen for public benefits and sign people up for financial coaching, financial education workshops, small business help and homeowner assistance. We also bring our services on the road to do 5 on-site tax preparation at local senior housing developments and social service centers.

UNHP partners with Ariva and Fordham Bedford Community Services (FBCS) on free tax preparation utilizing Ariva’s tax expertise and site management as well as additional staff and the Heiskell Technology Center from FBCS. Lift has been screening people for public benefits and linking tax clients with their job placement services and both Apple and Spring Bank can open same day bank accounts for those people who do not have an account, but would like to take advantage of direct deposit. The program is managed by UNHP staff but powered by volunteer tax preparers and intake staff from Fordham University, Manhattan College and The Roosevelt Educational Campus.

For the first time this year, UNHP is offering free credit reports and a brief financial coaching session to clients on their tax day.  UNHP can also schedule free financial coaching appointments and sign interested people up for a 5 session financial education workshop that starts on March 27th.  In addition to providing free and accurate tax preparation to low income residents, UNHP views this as an opportunity to connect our clients to the range of financial services provided by the Northwest Bronx Resource Center and our partners.

Call UNHP at (718) 933-2539, visit our tax prep project page or go to our events page to sign up for a tax appointment, our financial workshops or financial coaching.

As part of our affordable housing mission, UNHP has lent $5.9 million in low-interest affordable housing loans, provided a range of assistance to 67 multifamily buildings and oversees the administration, management and maintenance of 24 buildings with over 1,000 units. Featured above are some highlights from our October 29th, 2013 UNHP Building Tour, with UNHP board and staff.

Sneak peek of our most recent building tour, with a Halloween twist!

Highlighted here are photos of staffs and some of our buildings!

Featuring #WestFarms #TieboutAve #ConcourseHouse. Buildings in partnership with Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation and Dougert Management Corp.

Halloween decorations by many of the tenants, spooky boiler rooms and mysterious micro turbines, fun was had by all!

Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation, one of our partners during these 30 years came out in full force to support this year’s Fundraiser Celebration! A big group of FBHC supporters and friends stopped by to celebrate with us and our honoree Brian Byrne, who has been a founding force and strong supporter for UNHP since our inception. Special thanks to FBHC for not only attending this event but also for the pint glass sponsorship, and supporting our continued efforts towards affordable housing!

This partnership with FBHC will be formalized in our new initiative, the Northwest Bronx Collaborative. Through this collaborative effort with Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation and Fordham Bedford Community Services, UNHP will work to increase our collective impact for our tenants and the Bronx in general.

Special Thanks to all of our Bronx Donors for the generous gifts for our 30th Party Raffles and giveaways!

We celebrated our 30th Anniversary on October 3rd at the historic Dollar Savings Bank building on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx!  Over 200 people enjoyed the festivities at the landmark building with its marble walls, art deco chandeliers and golden accents throughout.

Special thanks to Apple Bank for their generosity and use of this splendid branch. CRA Officer, Richard O’Brien VP and Branch Manager, Dianha Rivera, were especially helpful.
With the support from sponsors, attendees and donors UNHP raised close to $60,000 at the event. This funds will be used to continue and renew our efforts to create and preserve affordable housing and bring needed resources to the northwest Bronx.
